Tests I have seen run on the Beta did not show any diffrerence in graphics performance. I have not yet read they have actually done this in El Capitan. Metal is Apple's 15 year late to the party attempt to become compliant and implement their version of Direct X. Apple also sells machines at Apple prices with the worst possible GPUs compared to the CPUs.

Either should be recognized and OSX install its drivers. You would need to restrict your choices to cards that are powered solely off the motherboard bus. There are several problems with adding a graphics card starting with power supply. It's possible to upgrade to an AMD 2GB card which seems like a good option and much less than moving to a new Mac Pro. RAM and CPU seem rarely over troubled and so I am thinking the graphics card is the limiting factor. I have 16GB RAM & an SSD but only an an NVIDIA 512k graphics card. My 2009 Mac Pro 4.1 is now running El Capitan and I had hoped things would improve through the use of metal but it seems my old 'pro' doesn't support this. I'm struggling with using Lightroom and to a lesser extent PS CC now that I am using a Nikon D810.
